Welcome back to another one of the King's addition of Violence. This a good
way to deffand your-self if you come to a situation and you must use
physical force. Now just follow these ruls when you fight and you might just
Win. but only if you know what to do!

1. If some jerky comes up to you and tells you to fuck right off you can do
one of two things. you can a insult him back or b hit him hard in the
gut.
2. If you done A in number one you can expact him to hit you. Look at his
hands the one you see moving back is the one that is going to hit you with
so look and when he puls it up move your hand up and block it. then with
your other free hand hit him on the jaw! (if you put a lot of power into it
you might even knock him out!) O
3. If you done B in number one and he does't hit you back and runswalks away
then you might get charged! but if he hits you back then grab his shirt
coler with your weak hand and with your powerful hand hit him non-stop
in the jaw,nose, or for-head (constant hiting in these areas may make him
k.o. (k.o.=knock out!) 0
4. Now let me tell you about weapons (scince the rest is based on weapons!)
anything can be a weapon when you fight! even a simple twig! how can a
twig be a weapon you ask Well if you are on the ground get up holding
the twig and stab him in the leg! (he wont kick your ass anymore! trust
me on that one!) well back to weapons! If your walking along the
side-walk and some one grabs you around the neck holding a knife and
threating to cut your neck grab his arm, lung the arm stright over your
sholder and pull it down (you will snap elbo the joint.)
5. If some one is holding a knife to you (must be a few inches from you) as
he blinks use your right hand to hit him right on the palm, as your
doing that, with your left hit him on the nuckles of the same hand
if you hit him hard enough you'll pop his hand off the socket!
as he is screaming grab his head pull it down towards your waste lift
your knee and slam it in his Face (the fucker will go down! then you can
call the cops or steel his money and WALK away! if you run some one will
call the cops on you. Only run if the cops are coming after you.!
6. THE BATTAL IN THE SCOOL YARD!
If the bully picks on you, you must kick his ass for the chicksguys
there. When he comes towards you he might whant something in your lunch-
box. But what he doesent know WILL hurt him!
Let your mom but HOT, REALLY HOT coffe in your thermiss as he grabs you
tell him you got some good Necter to offer him. as he looks throw the
coffe in his face as he grabs his face knee him in the balls.
he'll go down! If you relly hate him grab a hand full of sand and put
in his mouth. If he is k.o'ed kick him in the ribs!
when the cops come tell them it was Self Deffance! you'll get off scot-
free and you'll have all the chicksguys!! )
7. When on the street and some punk comes up to you and whants to fuck you
up hit him in the nose with all your might (I had fights with these ass
holes and they are relly hard! Its like there bones wont break I only
lost once to them and thats because I had a few jump me as he was
losing. If you dont have a lot experance run from them.)
well i will tell you what to do if you are experanced.
Grab any thing hard near by and SMACK the fuck'in guy in the head!
when the others rush you Kick,Smack,And hit anywhere., where ever you
land them is good! (hope you can take them!) 0
8. Well im tired of writing so if you whant more wait and call the bbs where
you got this at! Or in the next issue i'll include a form that you can send
money to so if every thing goes well I will put up a bbs and with all the
info on sports,fights,sex, and more fights you can be a major Stud like
the king & the Fly

Software that is a commercial product, sold in stores or via
mailorder, that does not contain a statement saying it is OK to
give copies to others is NOT legal for distribution on a BBS.

Example: Lotus 1-2-3 is a commercial product, it is copyrighted,
and the copyright notice states you MAY NOT copy it for others.

Example: PC-Write (the Shareware version) is also copyrighted,
but the copyright statement clearly states you MAY make unlimited
copies for your friends.

TRICKS TO MAKE AN EDUCATED GUESS: Sometimes it is difficult to
guess whether or not some software or diskette is legal for BBS
distribution. There are a few obvious guidelines I use on the
Exec-PC BBS:

There is no documentation: Probably an illegal copy. A
Shareware author will always provide documentation with his
product. If he does not, nobody will be willing to make a
monetary contribution to his efforts. If the documentation takes
the form of a very short (one or two screen long) and sketchy
README file, be suspicious. The software is probably a hack
(illegal pirated copy) of a commercial product, and someone wrote
up a small hint file to help other pirates run the software.

The software is too good to be true: It probably IS too good to
be true! A good game, a good database, a good utility of any
type, requires at least dozens of hours to write. The really
good stuff requires thousands of hours to write, sometimes dozens
of MAN YEARS to write. Nobody is going to give this away for
free! If you get a copy of a game and it seems to good to be
true, I bet it is an illegal copy.

The software does strange things to your disk drives: For
example, when it is run, the A: drive or B: drive spin for a
moment, even though there is no disk present. This sometimes
indicates the software is looking for a key disk, but someone has
modified the software so the key disk is not needed. This is
probably illegal software.

The software does not have an easy escape to DOS, no EXIT
command: This usually means the software is illegal, someone has
hacked it to make it run, but it was too difficult to add a
proper escape to DOS to the commercial product.

DON'T GET ME WRONG, I am making it sound as if ALL software is
illegal. This is not the case. It is usually very easy to
recognize a fine, legal package, since the author is proud of his
work and usually puts his name, his favorite BBS number, a
disclaimer, a Shareware notice, or some other hint into the
package. It may be as simple as an initial screen saying "This
is Shareware written by so-and-so, this is Shareware, if you like
it please send $XX to the following address", and other text of
that type.

If in doubt, ask the Sysop!

<[Holly] HS> Welcome to our formal conference with Jonathon
Wallace,

Thanks very much for inviting me....

<[Holly] HS> Can you tell us a little about yourself and your
book before we start?

I am a lawyer in private practice in New York City
specializing in computer related matters including BBS law. I
am the co-author with Rees Morrison, of SYSLAW: The Sysop's
Legal Manual, and editor of The Computer Law Letter, a bimonthly
newsletter.

<[Mel] NIGHTDIVER> Jon, would you talk a bit about where free
speech stops and libel begins. We obviously want to be able to
criticize a product freely but I guess we have to stop at
calling the developer names or spreading rumors that he is going
bankrupt. Where does libel start? and what is the sysops
liability for allowing such messages to stand?

Libel varies from state to state. In many places
its a knowingly false statement. In others it may even be a
negligently false statement. The responsibility of a sysop is,
in my opinion about equivalent to the liability of a newspaper
publisher for a comment someone else makes in his paper.
Constitutional law says that a public figure can only recover
against a newspaper for a libel done with "actual malice".


<[Mel] NIGHTDIVER> For our purposes who would you say is a
public figure a developer pushing his product? A publisher of
an online magazine? The sysop?

There is no precise definition. Any of those
might be held to be a public figure, as would your town
councilman, but not your next door neighbor.

<[Mel] NIGHTDIVER> I've heard the sysop's liability in libel
compared to a news stand's liability but that boggles my mind
because I never heard of a newsstand claiming a compilation
copyright. Would you comment on the sysop's position?

Ever since there have been BBS's, people have
debated whether a sysop is a publisher, a newsstand, a common
carrier, a bartender, etc. A sysop is NOT a common carrier
(obligated to carry all messages, can't control content) Nor is
a sysop a newsstand (too passive). I think a sysop is
essentially a sort of publisher. She has the right to edit and
control the contents of the BBS.

I've got a few questions, but I'll try not to hog
things for others. Awhile ago, I ran into a particularly nasty
"anarchy" BBS in New York. It offered files on everything from
literally how to poison people to "kitchen improvised plastic
explosives". Is offering info like this legal? Is there any
legal precedent?

Dave, the law says that "information doesn't kill
people.. people kill people." However distasteful, describing
how to make poisons is constitutionally protected speech.

<[Ralph] ST.REPORT> Evening Counselor, nice to see that
information is information and not murderous non-sense. My
question is, what recourse, if any does an individual have when
they find that certain information has been labeled "overly
informative" and has been censored as a result?

Ralph, if you mean censored by the sysop the user
really has no recourse. As I said, a sysop has the right to
edit, modify and delete the BBS's contents.

<[Ralph] ST.REPORT> I see, well a sysop was not the cause in
this situation....in fact the sysop was quite fair about the
entire matter... much more so than the individual.....I mean as
individual to individual.

Who censored the message, then?

<[Ralph] ST.REPORT> The message was deleted as a result of the
ensuing hulabaloo <-? voluntarily by me.

Ralph---The sysop is the final arbiter in such
cases. It is only censorship when the government intervenes to
prevent speech.

<[Ralph] ST.REPORT> I agree, in effect I censored myself to
avoid more controversy, I was looking for your opinion and I
thank you for your time.

Yes I was wondering if you could comment on
self-maintaining BBSs that automatically validate uploaded
files. Is this illegal in itself, or could the sysop be in
trouble if a copyrighted file is up for a bit of time till he
realizes it?

Bob, there are no precise rules in this area yet.
My best guess is that the sysop has an obligation to exercise
due care. For that reason I would try and set things up so that
a pirated file would be discovered in under a couple of days.
Therefore, the idea of a self-validating BBS makes me nervous.

I see. right - but its that couple of days that the
file might be up. ok something to think about. thanks.

Jon, do you consider your SYSLAW book to apply much to
information service sysops, or is it 95% for the private BBS
operator?

The book was written for the BBS sysop, but much
of what's in it applies equally to service sysops...e.g., the
discussion of copyright, libel, etc.

Hi again. As I understand it, the libel law says
(basically) that to commit libel, you have to say something
false, know it's false, and do it with malice intended. First,
am I right? (*grin*) Second, does that apply different to public
figures vs. mere mortals?

Dave, the rules you stated are correct for a media
defendant (newspaper, etc.) libelling a public figure. If the
"libeller" is a private citizen, the states are free to hold you
to a mere negligence standard.

Can you expand on "negligence"?

Yes a careless false statement, e.g. something you
didn't bother to verify.

Along the lines of the self-validating
files...what if users upload copyrighted text into the message
bases? Song lyrics, documentation, that type of thing?
Messages are never held for validation.

I believe a sysop should arrange to read every new
message every 24 hours or so. If its a big message base, get
some assistant sysops to help. Of course, copyrighted text may
not be easy to recognize, but if you do recognize copyrighted
material it should be deleted unless its a fair use (e.g., brief
quote from a book or song, etc.)

<[John] JWEAVERJR> Can you comment on the differences between
the legal standards for libel and slander? And, in particular,
which category does this RTC (as a "printed record" of a live
conversation) fall?

Slander is spoken libel is written I am fairly
sure that all online speech will be classified as libel, not
slander. Frankly, I am more familiar with the libel standards,
which we have been discussing than with slander, where they
differ.

I did come in a bit late, if this has already been
answered; where might I find your book, and what's it retail at?

Okay back to libel. Are editors of magazines in
general held responsible for the content of their magazine, or
is the writer of a given article deemed libellous that's held
responsible? Or both?

Potentially both.

The standards would depend on if the libeller
(sounds like a referee! grin) was a public figure or private
person, also? e.g., negligence vs. malice?

The US Constitution imposes the standards we
discussed for media defendants, and leaves the states free to
make their own laws in all other cases.

Since networks are interstate, which states' laws
applies?

Dave, thats something the courts will have to
settle. Magazines have been successfully sued in states where
they sold only a few copies.

<[Mel] NIGHTDIVER> I understand there have been some cases
regarding private messages in a BB as opposed to public
messages. Does that mean that if someone sends me Email here on
GEnie and I forward it to someone else, that I could be in
trouble?

Mel, we are getting into a whole new area here.
The Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) which protects
the privacy of email. In the case you described. There would
be no liability under ECPA, because the recipient of the message
has the right to make it public.

<[Holly] HS> I have a related question, Jonathon...are you
familiar with Thompson v. Predaina? (The case that never was...
*grin*)

Yes, I read the pleadings, and have talked to and
been flamed by, Linda Thompson .

<[Holly] HS> Can you summarize the case a bit for the rest of us
and give us your opinion? (I happen to personally know both
parties... Linda was a friend of mine. Bob is a friend of mine.
Key word: "was") Everyone's been flamed by Linda Thompson.
*grin* Linda sued Bob under the ECPA claiming that he had
disclosed private messages and files of hers to the public. He
was not the recipient of the files or messages and, if the facts
as stated in the complaint are true, it seems as if there was a
technical ECPA violation. The case never went any further
because (I am told). Predaina declared bankruptcy (since you
know him, you can clarify if this turns out not to be the case).

<[Holly] HS> Bob did declare bankruptcy, which was a wise move.
I didn't read the complaint, however, I also know that when
Linda (and Al) had a BBS, they were "guilty" of exactly what I
understood Bob did. (Allegedly)

I've often thought it was a too drastic move on
his part. Based on the information I had, I doubted the case
would have resulted in drastic damages, even if there was a
technical violation.

The moral of the story: Don't disclose private mail of which you
are not the sender or recipient.

<[Holly] HS> I think it was very precautionary on Bob's part.
And, if I understand what happened, the case was dropped because
Linda was suing partially on the grounds of character defamation
which allowed Bob to dredge up some of Linda's rather tawdry
past, allegedly. (I don't think I'm spelling that right. It
looks wrong. :-) Thanks, Jonathon... I have a few more for
later... :-)

Hi Jon, this is deb! Christensen, I take care of the
Commodore and Amiga areas here on GEnie. My question is an
unresolved one about copyrights and music. Are there any 'fair
use' guidelines which affect musical arrangements to computer
transcriptions which people upload and distribute for their
electronic friends?

Deb....The upload of a copyrighted song or image
in electronic form is a copyright violation. I have never yet
heard of a case of a court finding such an upload to be a "fair
use" mainly because courts haven't really yet dealt with the
issue of uploads at all. However, I think the argument for a
fair use is slim, considering that the standards of fair use
include whether the use....is commercial, and how much of the
work is copied. An upload to a commercial service of an entire
song or image, for download by people paying connect charges,
seems like a pretty clear copyright infringement.

So, a musician does not have a right to arrange music and
perform it for his friends? Is it the uploading that is a
violation or the computer arrangement for the performance?

A private performance is not a copyright violation
but there is nothing private about an upload to a commercial
service with more than 100,000 users.

And to a public BBS?

Public BBS: I would say its the same thing, even
though not quite as commercial.

Aha, so it isn't anything to do with cost involved. It is
the actual transcription which is the problem? I *know*
digitized music is a problem but had always presumed we had the
same right to make an arrangement on a computer as we did on
paper. :-(

Deb, I would say you do have the same right to
make an arrangement, just not to distribute it to other people.

What are the legalities of telephone companies
charging business rates for BBS telephone lines? I understand
they have either proposed it, or tried it in some places. Your
comments?

It has happened a lot, but I understand in several
places concerted efforts to communicate with the telco got them
to back down. Not aware if anyone ever mounted a legal
challenge, though.

I see. I don't see how a bbs constitutes the charge,
but I guess there is a large grey area there.

The telco's argument was that the BBS was
providing a quasi-commercial service. If you look at any BBS
list, you will see a proportion of company sponsored BBS's that
confuse the issue.

Jon, earlier you stated that the recipient of EMail was
free to distribute that mail. Is there any way to ensure
privacy in EMail? Would a Copyright notice on each message
prevent further distribution?

I assume you are asking if there is a way to keep
the recipient of a message from making it public.

Yes.

The answer is not really. Putting a copyright
notice on might give many people pause, but suppose someone
violated that copyright, what are the damages?

Got two for you. First, with BBS's and networks
being so (relatively) new, are there a large number of libel
cases of stuff going over the nets, as opposed to say magazine
cases? E.g., is it a growing practice? *grin*

I am only aware of one case of online libel, the
one discussed in my book, the Dun & Bradstreet case (and I guess
Thompson v. Predaina also included that element).

Second, do you find that judges and juries in such
cases (jury assuming a jury trial, of course) have a great deal
of "learning curve" to go through about networks? Most people I
know outside computers don't know a genie from a compuserve from
a hole in the wall. they can't imagine what the BBS world is
like. Does this make such a case tougher/easier on an attorney?

I frequently will try a computer case to the
judge, waiving the jury demand less education to do but I
wouldn't necessarily do that if I were the defendant in a libel
case. Depends what part of the country you're in; in Manhattan,
you could probably get a jury that knew what a modem was.

And if not, it would probably be prudent to try to
educate one vs. six ? Fair enough.. okay I'm done

It really depends on the circumstances..deciding
when to go for a jury also has to do with how much you need, and
can exploit, a sympathy factor.

<[Holly] HS> I have one last question myself before we wrap
up.... (which is not intended as a pun with regard to my
question... *grin*) Shrink wrap licenses, are they enforceable?
Legal?

There has been some disagreement on this but my
personal opinion is that the average shrink wrap license would
not stand up. It was never negotiated, never really agreed to
and can't convert what is obviously a sale into something else
any more than calling a car a plane will change it into one.

<[Holly] HS> However, if it is visible before the buyer actually
buys then can a presumption be made that they have read and
agreed?

There are still other problems. The buyer hasn't
dealt with the publisher, but with a retailer. There is no
"privity" of contract.

<[Holly] HS> "privity" meaning... ?

No direct contractual relationship between
publisher and purchaser, despite the fiction that the license
purpotts to create.

<[Holly] HS> Then a company who insists that this disk and this
software still belongs to them, you don't feel it is
enforceable?

It would depend on the circumstances, but if you
buy an off the shelf product at Software to Go, in my opinion,
you have purchased the copy even if there is a shrink wrap
license that says you have only licensed it.

<[Holly] HS> Interesting... another point of licensing... have
you read the Apple licensing agreement?

I read it some time ago, when the case started.

<[Holly] HS> It states that Mac ROMs can only be used in an
Apple machine. Although there is contention that the ROMs are
the heart of the machine, so whether they goest, so goest the
machine.

Sorry, I thought you meant the Apple/Microsoft
license.

<[Holly] HS> For those of us who use an emulator, like Spectre
or Magic Sac, it could be an important point.

The question is a very tricky one. On the whole,
it would be....difficult to prevent a legitimate purchaser of a
ROM from doing anything he wanted with it, including sticking it
in another machine. But I haven't seen the license you refer
to.

What is the Registry?

What is the Registry?
The Registry is a database used to store settings and options for the 32 bit versions of Microsoft Windows including Windows 95, 98, ME and NT/2000. It contains information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, and preferences of the PC. Whenever a user makes changes to a Control Panel settings, or File Associations, System Policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the Registry.

The physical files that make up the registry are stored differently depending on your version of Windows; under Windows 95 & 98 it is contained in two hidden files in your Windows directory, called USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT, for Windows Me there is an additional CLASSES.DAT file, while under Windows NT/2000 the files are contained seperately in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Config directory. You can not edit these files directly, you must use a tool commonly known as a "Registry Editor" to make any changes (using registry editors will be discussed later in the article).

The Structure of The Registry
The Registry has a hierarchal structure, although it looks complicated the structure is similar to the directory structure on your hard disk, with Regedit being similar to Windows Explorer.

Each main branch (denoted by a folder icon in the Registry Editor, see left) is called a Hive, and Hives contains Keys. Each key can contain other keys (sometimes referred to as sub-keys), as well as Values. The values contain the actual information stored in the Registry. There are three types of values; String, Binary, and DWORD - the use of these depends upon the context.

There are six main branches, each containing a specific portion of the information stored in the Registry. They are as follows:


* HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - This branch contains all of your file association mappings to support the drag-and-drop feature, OLE information, Windows shortcuts, and core aspects of the Windows user interface.
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER - This branch links to the section of HKEY_USERS appropriate for the user currently logged onto the PC and contains information such as logon names, desktop settings, and Start menu settings.
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - This branch contains computer specific information about the type of hardware, software, and other preferences on a given PC, this information is used for all users who log onto this computer.
* HKEY_USERS - This branch contains individual preferences for each user of the computer, each user is represented by a SID sub-key located under the main branch.
* HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG - This branch links to the section of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE appropriate for the current hardware configuration.
* HKEY_DYN_DATA - This branch points to the part of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, for use with the Plug-&-Play features of Windows, this section is dymanic and will change as devices are added and removed from the system.



Each registry value is stored as one of five main data types:


* REG_BINARY - This type stores the value as raw binary data. Most hardware component information is stored as binary data, and can be displayed in an editor in hexadecimal format.
* REG_DWORD - This type represents the data by a four byte number and is commonly used for boolean values, such as "0" is disabled and "1" is enabled. Additionally many parameters for device driver and services are this type, and can be displayed in REGEDT32 in binary, hexadecimal and decimal format, or in REGEDIT in hexadecimal and decimal format.
* REG_EXPAND_SZ - This type is an expandable data string that is string containing a variable to be replaced when called by an application. For example, for the following value, the string "%SystemRoot%" will replaced by the actual location of the directory containing the Windows NT system files. (This type is only available using an advanced registry editor such as REGEDT32)
* REG_MULTI_SZ - This type is a multiple string used to represent values that contain lists or multiple values, each entry is separated by a NULL character. (This type is only available using an advanced registry editor such as REGEDT32)
* REG_SZ - This type is a standard string, used to represent human readable text values.



Other data types not available through the standard registry editors include:


* REG_DWORD_LITTLE_ENDIAN - A 32-bit number in little-endian format.
* REG_DWORD_BIG_ENDIAN - A 32-bit number in big-endian format.
* REG_LINK - A Unicode symbolic link. Used internally; applications should not use this type.
* REG_NONE - No defined value type.
* REG_QWORD - A 64-bit number.
* REG_QWORD_LITTLE_ENDIAN - A 64-bit number in little-endian format.
* REG_RESOURCE_LIST - A device-driver resource list.



Editing The Registry

The Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE) is included with most version of Windows (although you won't find it on the Start Menu) it enables you to view, search and edit the data within the Registry. There are several methods for starting the Registry Editor, the simplest is to click on the Start button, then select Run, and in the Open box type "regedit", and if the Registry Editor is installed it should now open and look like the image below.

An alternative Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE) is available for use with Windows NT/2000, it includes some additional features not found in the standard version, including; the ability to view and modify security permissions, and being able to create and modify the extended string values REG_EXPAND_SZ & REG_MULTI_SZ.

This can be done by simply right-clicking on a blank area of your desktop, selecting New, then Shortcut, then in the Command line box enter "regedit.exe" and click Next, enter a friendly name (e.g. 'Registry Editor') then click Finish and now you can double click on the new icon to launch the Registry Editor.

Using Regedit to modify your Registry
Once you have started the Regedit you will notice that on the left side there is a tree with folders, and on the right the contents (values) of the currently selected folder.

Like Windows explorer, to expand a certain branch (see the structure of the registry section), click on the plus sign [+] to the left of any folder, or just double-click on the folder. To display the contents of a key (folder), just click the desired key, and look at the values listed on the right side. You can add a new key or value by selecting New from the Edit menu, or by right-clicking your mouse. And you can rename any value and almost any key with the same method used to rename files; right-click on an object and click rename, or click on it twice (slowly), or just press F2 on the keyboard. Lastly, you can delete a key or value by clicking on it, and pressing Delete on the keyboard, or by right-clicking on it, and choosing Delete.

Note: it is always a good idea to backup your registry before making any changes to it. It can be intimidating to a new user, and there is always the possibility of changing or deleting a critical setting causing you to have to reinstall the whole operating system. It's much better to be safe than sorry!

Importing and Exporting Registry Settings

A great feature of the Registry Editor is it's ability to import and export registry settings to a text file, this text file, identified by the .REG extension, can then be saved or shared with other people to easily modify local registry settings. You can see the layout of these text files by simply exporting a key to a file and opening it in Notepad, to do this using the Registry Editor select a key, then from the "Registry" menu choose "Export Registry File...", choose a filename and save. If you open this file in notepad you will see a file similar to the example below:

The layout is quite simple, REGEDIT4 indicated the file type and version, [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup] indicated the key the values are from, "SetupType"=dword:00000000 are the values themselves the portion after the "=" will vary depending on the type of value they are; DWORD, String or Binary.

So by simply editing this file to make the changes you want, it can then be easily distributed and all that need to be done is to double-click, or choose "Import" from the Registry menu, for the settings to be added to the system Registry.

Deleting keys or values using a REG file
It is also possible to delete keys and values using REG files. To delete a key start by using the same format as the the REG file above, but place a "-" symbol in front of the key name you want to delete. For example to delete the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup] key the reg file would look like this:

The format used to delete individual values is similar, but instead of a minus sign in front of the whole key, place it after the equal sign of the value. For example, to delete the value "SetupType" the file would look like:

Use this feature with care, as deleting the wrong key or value could cause major problems within the registry, so remember to always make a backup first.

Regedit Command Line Options
Regedit has a number of command line options to help automate it's use in either batch files or from the command prompt. Listed below are some of the options, please note the some of the functions are operating system specific.

* /s [filename] Silent import, i.e. hide confirmation box when importing files
* /e [filename] [regpath] Export the registry to [filename] starting at [regpath]

Maintaining the Registry

How can you backup and restore the Registry?

Windows 95
Microsoft included a utility on the Windows 95 CD-ROM that lets you create backups of the Registry on your computer. The Microsoft Configuration Backup program, CFGBACK.EXE, can be found in the \Other\Misc\Cfgback directory on the Windows 95 CD-ROM. This utility lets you create up to nine different backup copies of the Registry, which it stores, with the extension RBK, in your \Windows directory. If your system is set up for multiple users, CFGBACK.EXE won't back up the USER.DAT file.

After you have backed up your Registry, you can copy the RBK file onto a floppy disk for safekeeping. However, to restore from a backup, the RBK file must reside in the \Windows directory. Windows 95 stores the backups in compressed form, which you can then restore only by using the CFGBACK.EXE utility.

Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 98 automatically creates a backup copy of the registry every time Windows starts, in addition to this you can manually create a backup using the Registry Checker utility by running SCANREGW.EXE from Start | Run menu.

What to do if you get a Corrupted Registry
Windows 95, 98 and NT all have a simple registry backup mechanism that is quite reliable, although you should never simply rely on it, remember to always make a backup first!

Windows 95
In the Windows directory there are several hidden files, four of these will be SYSTEM.DAT & USER.DAT, your current registry, and SYSTEM.DA0 & USER.DA0, a backup of your registry. Windows 9x has a nice reature in that every time it appears to start successfully it will copy the registry over these backup files, so just in case something goes wrong can can restore it to a known good state. To restore the registry follow these instruction:

* Click the Start button, and then click Shut Down.

* Click Restart The Computer In MS-DOS Mode, then click Yes.

* Change to your Windows directory. For example, if your Windows directory is c:\windows, you would type the following:

cd c:\windows

* Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each one. (Note that SYSTEM.DA0 and USER.DA0 contain the number zero.)

attrib -h -r -s system.dat
attrib -h -r -s system.da0
copy system.da0 system.dat
attrib -h -r -s user.dat
attrib -h -r -s user.da0
copy user.da0 user.dat

* Restart your computer.



Following this procedure will restore your registry to its state when you last successfully started your computer.

If all else fails, there is a file on your hard disk named SYSTEM.1ST that was created when Windows 95 was first successfully installed. If necessary you could also change the file attributes of this file from read-only and hidden to archive to copy the file to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT.

Windows NT
On Windows NT you can use either the "Last Known Good" option or RDISK to restore to registry to a stable working configuration.

How can I clean out old data from the Registry?
Although it's possible to manually go through the Registry and delete unwanted entries, Microsoft provides a tool to automate the process, the program is called RegClean. RegClean analyzes Windows Registry keys stored in a common location in the Windows Registry. It finds keys that contain erroneous values, it removes them from the Windows Registry after having recording those entries in the Undo.Reg file.

1. What's a image file?
(>) A image file is a CD/DVD, but instead of insert it into your CD/DVD-Rom, you open it from inside your Hard Disk. So, it's a file that replaces a normal CD/DVD. Inside the image are the CD/DVD files like if it were a CD/DVD.

2. What are the image files extensions?
(>) There's many extensions, but the most common are:

(>) Usually a CD/DVD Burning software has that option, but personally i use UltraISO. It allow me to create an ISO, BiN/CUE, NRG and iMG/CCD/SUB image file.

(>) Daemon-Tools is the most powerful one to use, and the most simple too.

6. How to burn a image file?
(>) Some image files must be burned using a certain software in order to work fine, but usually a common CD/DVD burning software works fine. I use Nero Burning ROM to burn my images.

7. How to work with Daemon-Tools?
(>) 1. Install the software into your Hard Drive. After installing reboot (or not) your PC.
(>) 2. After 1. , open Daemon-Tools. It will appear in your startup bar.
(>) 3. Right click on it, go to Virtual CD/DVD-ROM » Set number of devices » 2 Drives. If you want to use more drives you can set it on. I personally use 2. It's your decision.
(>) 4. Right click on it, go to Virtual CD/DVD-ROM » Device x: [X:](....). Here you will mount your image. Just choose the image to open it (x means Device 1 or 2, etc.)([X:] the letter of your device).
(>) 5. Done, now your image is working like a CD.

8. How to burn with Nero Burning ROM?
(>) 1. Install Nero Burning ROM.
(>) 2. Open it, choose what is the storage type you gonna use to burn the image, or is a CD or a DVD.

(>) 4. Choose the image you want to burn.
(>) 5. Done, let it burn baby!

FiNAL NOTES:
(>) If you want to burn a BiN with Nero Burning ROM, you will have to have the CUE file. When you are going to open the image, if it's BiN, you open the CUE file. If you don't have the CUE and you don't want to download it, it's simple:

When people talk about virii (a subject dear to my heart) it is common
for people to treat the virus, the trojan horse, the logic bomb, etc.
as if they were one and the same. Now, personally, I find the idea
insulting and I am sure that many virus writers would feel the same
way. Time and time again, I have seen the worthy name of VIRUS heaped
upon the ranks of such undeserving pranks as the common TROJAN horse.

To think that the two are one and the same is fine, if you are the
common lamer that so often finds himself behind the computer screen.
To be unable to differenciate between a virus and a trojan is
perfectly acceptable for many. If you are entirely satisified with
knowing just enough to be able to start your computer and run your
application, then for heaven's sake don't read this article. In fact,
why don't you go buy a MacIntosh?

As for the rest of us, we realize that there IS a difference. And in
order to prevent ourselves from looking like clueless idiots, we
strive to learn the differences between the virus and the trojan horse
and what each one is and is not capable of.

What advantage is gained by learning of such things as a computer
virus? The person who is well-informed in such matters gains many
advantages over one who is not.

For one, he will quickly notice when his system shows signs of virus
activity and he will catch it before it has had time to do significant
damage to his system. Since he will have taken the proper precautions
in advance he will be able to quickly restore his system system while
suffering minimal loss.

Since he knows what a virus can and can't do, he won't believe every
quirk in his hardware or software is actually the result of some
devious virus. He will not be lulled into the false sense of security
provided by such worthless products as CPAV or NAV. He will have the
wisdom to look a trojan horse 'in the mouth'.

When it comes to virii, people are inclined to believe alot of stupid
shit. Let's face it, people are inclined to believe alot of stupid
shit period, but when it comes to virii, they tend to get even

Q: What is a virus?

a VIRUS is a small, executable program with the ability to replicate
itself by adding its code to that of a host program and/or the system
area of a hard or floppy disk. The user is generally unaware of the
actions of a virus as it replicates and usually only becomes aware of
its presence when the virus 'activates', which it does according to a
given set of conditions and at which time it is often too late.

However, once the user knows what signs to look for, it can be very
obvious when viral activity occurs. More on the signs in a little bit.
Let's discuss the difference between viruses.

Every virus has its own personality. Viruses differ in many ways, each
having its own unique properties that make it different. Here are some
ways that viruses differ from each other:

þ SIZE - A virus can be as small as 66 bytes or less, or as large
as 4096 bytes or more. Compared to most computer programs a virus
must be very small.

þ METHOD OF INFECTION - A virus can infect the host program in
different ways. Below are three methods commonly used. They are
by no means the only ways, but they are the most common. It is
possible for a virus to use one or more of these methods.

þ OVERWRITING - When a virus infects using this method, it will
simply write a copy of itself over the begining of the host
program. This is a very simple method and is used by more
primitive viruses. An infected file has been destroyed and
must be restored from a backup disk. Overwriting tends to make
the user suspicious becuase the host program no longer
functions. This method of infection causes no change in the
size of an infected program.

þ APPENDING - This method is a bit more complex. The virus
appends itself onto the end of the host program and also edits
the begining of the program. When the user runs the infected
program it will jump to the end of the program where the virus
is located, perform the functions of the virus, then return
and continue to run the host program. To the user, the program
is functioning normally. This method of infection causes
infected programs to increase in size.

Some appending viruses are unable to tell whether or not
they have already infected a program and will continue to
infect the program hundreds of times, causing it to grow
considerably in size.

þ DISK INFECTORS - Other viruses will infect the boot record or
partition table. This is an executable area of the disk that
is automatically run every time you boot up from the disk.
This means that as soon as the computer boots up, the virus is
in memory.

þ TSR - A virus may or may not become resident in memory. If it
does go TSR, then its chances of infecting files are greatly
increased. Otherwise it can only do its stuff when an infected
program is run. If the virus is in memory it can infect files any
time it chooses. Partition table and boot sector infecting viruses
are always TSRs.

þ STEALTH - Some TSR viruses use a sophisticated technique called
Stealth cloaking. What this means is the virus will fool the
system so that everything appears to be normal. When a user does
a directory listing the virus will intercept the disk read, and
alter the data so that the file sizes appear to be unchanged,
when in actuality they have increased in size.

Boot sector infectors may use stealth so that when the user
attempts to view the boot record, instead of showing the actual
boot record, a copy of the old boot record is returned instead.
Because of stealth techniques it may be impossible to detect a
virus once it has become resident in memory. The only sure way to
check for a stealth virus is to boot from a clean, write-
protected floppy, then scan the hard drive. It is a good idea to
prepare such a floppy disk ahead of time, and adding anti-virus
software such as Scan and F-Prot.


þ ACTIVATION CRITERIA AND EFFECT- The other area that gives a virus
its personality is the activation criteria, or what makes it go
off. Some activate by the date, others activate when a certain
program is run, and other will activate when they can't find any
more files that haven't been infected yet.

When a virus activates it will take a certain action. I will
refer to this as the activation effect. The efffect may be as
simple and harmless as displaying a message or as malicious as
trashing the victim's hard drive. Obviously, you want to find the
virus BEFORE it activatesþ

Just as with the AIDS virus, there is alot of bullshit concerning the
conditions under which a virus may infect your system. A virus can
only be caught by executing a program that has been infected with a
virus or by ATTEMPTING to boot up from an infected disk. You cannot
get a virus by merely LOOKING at an infected program or disk. A virus
can infect just about any executable file EXE COM OVL SYS DRV BIN and
the partition table and master boot record of floppies and hard disks.

Notice that above I said "attempting" to boot up from an infected
disk. Even if you attempt to boot up from A: and it tells you,
"Non-System disk" and then you boot from C: instead, the virus can
still be active if A: was infected. This is very important. It doesn't
have to be a succesful boot for the virus to get into memory. The
first thing it will probably do is infect C: drive. Then if you put a
new disk in A:, that will in turn be infected. That is why it is
important to keep a clean, write-protected floppy.


So, to sum it up:

þ You can catch a virus by executing an infected program, wether you
realize the program was run or not. This includes overlay files,
system drivers, EXE and COM files, etc.

þ You can catch a virus by ATTEMPTING to boot from an infected
floppy disk or hard disk, without regard as to whether that
attempt was succesful.

þ A cold boot will remove a virus from memory, a warm boot won't
necessarily do it. So press the button on your computer instead of
using CTRL-ALT-DEL.

þ You CAN'T get a virus just from looking at an infected disk or
file.

þ You CAN'T get a virus from a data file, unless it is actually an
executable and some other program renames it.

So in order to keep yourself in the clear, always check any new
program for viruses before running it, and never leave a disk in the
floppy drive when you boot upþ

Q: What are the signs that a virus is present?

There are several things that may indicate the presence of a virus on
your system.

1. Unexplained file growth in EXE and COM files may indicate an
appending virus.

2. Programs that used to work now return with some type of error
message and fail to work at all. This may indicate an overwriting
virus. Some common messages are "Program to big to fit in memory"
or "Unknown Command" and other similar messages. Thes should make
you suspicious.

3. Unexplained directory changes. If you execute a program and then
find that you are suddenly in a different directory, this may
indicate that a virus has been hunting for files to infect.

4. A decrease in available system memory. You should know how much
memory is usually free on your computer. If this number drops, it
may indicate a TSR virus. This does not always work since some
viruses do not protect the memory they use.

5. Unexplained ChkDsk errors. Stealth viruses will cause you to get a
CHKDSK error because they are altering the info before it gets to
CHKDSK. If you do a CHKDSK /F under this condition, it could CAUSE
considerable damage to the directory structure when in actuality
nothing was wrong in the first place.

6. Unexplained disk access. If the floppy or hard drive begin to light
up all of a sudden for no reason, it could mean viral activity. It
could also mean that you are running a disk cache with staged
writes enabled.

7. An overall slowdown in system activity. Programs may take longer to
execute than normal.

Q: How can I protect myself against viruses?

There is one fool-proof positive method. Never run any program that
isn't already on your computer and never use anybody else's disks.
Unfortunately, that is practical. So what is the next best thing?

þ Backups - Make frequent backups of the files on your hard disk.
Remember that at any given moment you may lose your entire hard
drive and its contents. Do you have backups of all your important
files? Things like Phone directories and passwords are especially
hard to get back. So be prepared for the worst.

þ Rescue Disk - Many programs such as TBAV and Norton Utilities will
allow you to create a 'rescue disk', which is a floppy disk that
can be booted from in an emergency. On this disk will be stored a
copy of important system info that could be very hard, if not
impossible to come up with manually. This includes a copy of the
partition table, Master Boot Record (MBR), CMOS settings, and other
important system info.

Also on this disk, you should store utilities that can be used to
detect, clean, and remove viruses from your hard disk. This disk
should be write-protected, and should be updated any time you
make changes to your system.

þ Knowledge - Keeping yourself well-informed about how viruses work,
any new viruses, and that kind of info is very important. Most of
the computer using public is entirely ignorant when it comes to
viruses. By readin this article, you have already made a big step
at reducing your odds of being hit by a virus.

þ AV Software - There are plenty of good Anti-Virus programs
available on the market. Most of the good ones are usually
shareware or freeware. Some are commercial. Many of the commercial
ones are lousy, too. Using some of the less effective virus
software can provide a false sense of security.

The following are products that I feel are not up to par as far as
AV software goes. I would avoid using them if possible, opting for
some of the products in the following list. However, if these
programs are the only ones you can find, then they certainly are
better than nothing at all.

þ Norton Anti-Virus (NAV)

þ Central Point Anti-Virus (CPAV)

þ Dos v6.0 Anti-Virus



What TO use:

These are some of the AV products that I DO recommend for you to
use. The more Anti-Virus software, the better protected you are.
Allow me to quickly explain what a Heuristic Scan is.

Normally, a virus scanner will look for a 'signature', a series of
bytes that occur inside the virus that can be used to identify a
specific virus. A huruistic scan takes a different approach. It
evaluates the code and looks for virus-like programming techniques.
This technique enables the scanner to find new or unknown viruses
and variations but also tends to cause more false positives and
takes longer. It is a very useful feature.


þ VirusScan - by MacAfee, Also known as SCAN. This is the
standard, and recognizes more than 1300 virus strains. This
program is readily available and offers frequent updates.
{Shareware}

þ F-Prot Anti Virus- by Frisk Software, I highly recommend this
program. It recognizes nearly as many viruses as SCAN and
recognizes trojan horse programs, as well. It has both a menu
driven and command line interface, huriustic scan, virus
database, and detailed descriptions. {Free for personal use}

þ Thunder Byte Anti Virus- This is a good package that does alot
of interesting things. It will create a rescue disk, is highly
configurable, does CRC test for changed files, and has an
adjustable heruistic scan. It will also allow you to replace
the bootstrap loader on your hard drive with a new one that
will perform an automatic CRC check upon bootup. This will
allow you to be instantly informed of any boot sector viruses.

þ Doctor Solomon's Anti Virus ToolKit - Although more expensive
than the others, this program has some interesting utilities.
It has "anti-stealth" technology, and an authorization TSR, and
a Certify TSR, which only allows you to run programs that have been
checked and had their CRC logged in. {Commercial}
